BMW Crankshaft Pulleys – A Known Weak Point
One of the main issues when looking at BMW applications is the Crankshaft Pulleys which have a tendency to fall apart. Like most pulleys, they are constructed with a piece of rubber, which acts to bind the two outer pieces together and to dampen vibrations. Over time this rubber becomes brittle, cracks and begins to fall apart causing the pulley to split into two seperate pieces.
It’s not uncommon for rubber parts in the engine to fail, as a result of the consistently high temperatures they are exposed to, however there seems to be a high failure rate specifically with these parts. There are many factors that contribute to this, however it’s currently unclear what is causing this trend of premature failure.
Which Engines are Affected
It’s important to note this doesn’t necessarily affect every BMW application. The engines with the highest failure rates are the N47, N57 and B47. The B47 engine was introduced to replace the N47 but seems to feature the same weak points.
