DV5 Engines Issues

The PSA 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine, commonly known as DV5, is used across a variety of Citroen, DS Automobiles, Ford, Peugeot, Toyota and Vauxhall/Opel passenger cars and commercial vehicles from 2017 onwards.

The DV5 1.5 BlueHDi diesel is well-capable and efficient, however like all emission-optimised diesel engines it showcases some well-documented service considerations. The engine uses a chain-driven camshaft arrangement, with the camshafts running directly within the camshaft carrier assembly.

Common Problems with DV5 Engines

Earlier applications of the DV5 engines are equipped with the 7mm timing chain design, which suffers from premature chain stretch, sprockets and guide wear and loss of correct valve timing. These all contribute to factors like oil contamination, extended service intervals and stop-start operation. As wear develops within the carrier journals, oil clearance can increase which leads to- reduced oil pressure at the camshaft, accelerated wear, excessive noise, rough running and timing correlation faults. Ultimately it will lead to internal engine damage.

Once the camshaft carrier has worn the journals on the carrier can no longer maintain correct and reliable oil film, new camshafts or chains will run out of tolerance and premature failures are likely. Replacing the carrier will restore correct camshaft alignment, reliable oil flow and pressure, and stable valve timing operation.

For DV5 engines showing timing chain-related wear, a camshaft carrier replacement kit is essential, not an optional upgrade

DV5 Timing System Redesign

The early PSA DV5 1.5 BlueHDi engines (2018–2022) were originally fitted with a 7mm timing chain, which was prone to stretch and premature wear. In early 2023, this was superseded by a redesigned 8mm timing chain system, that improved tensile strength, enhanced durability, and more resistance to fatigue.

The upgrade requires a complete timing system redesign, including revised camshafts and a modified camshaft carrier to ensure correct chain alignment, oil flow, and load distribution. While factory fitted 8mm systems provide improved reliability, correct servicing with manufacturer-approved engine oil and regular oil change intervals remains essential to prevent timing chain and camshaft wear.

For early DV5 engines, a full timing chain and camshaft carrier replacement is required to achieve the durability and long-term reliability of the updated 8mm system.

Correct Identification

The DV5 1.5 BlueHDi engine is fitted with two distinct camshaft timing chain specifications- the 7mm and the 8mm timing chain systems. These two differ not only in chain width, but also in guide geometry, tensioner design, and overall system operations. As a result, components are not interchangeable between the two.

Vehicle registration year, engine build date, and VIN data must not be relied upon as the sole method of identification due to production changes, running revisions, and previous repairs the data may not accurately reflect the timing system fitted to the engine. Correct identification must always be confirmed by inspection- measuring the fitted timing chain width, verifying the installed chain guides and confirming the tensioner specification.

When carrying out timing system repairs and servicing, all components- the chain, guides, and tensioner must be replaced as a complete matched set. Mixing 7mm and 8mm components will result in incorrect chain alignment, inconsistent tensioning, accelerated component wear and premature timing system failure.

Correct identification protects both the engine and the repair
