
DV5 Engine Issues
The PSA 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine, commonly known as DV5, is used across a variety of Citroen, DS, Ford, Peugeot, Toyota, Vauxhall passenger cars and commercial vehicles from 2017 onwards.
The DV5 is capable and efficient, however like all emission-optimised diesel engines it showcases some well documented service considerations.
Earlier applications of the DV5 engines are equipped with the 7mm timing chain design, which suffers from premature chain stretch, sprockets and guide wear and loss of correct valve timing. As wear develops within the carriers journals, oil clearance can increase which leads to: reduced oil pressure, accelerated wear, excessive noise, rough running and timing faults; ultimately leading to internal engine damage.
Once the camshaft carrier has worn journals it can no longer maintain correct and reliable oil film, new camshafts or chains will run out of tolerance and premature failures are likely. Replacing the carrier will restore correct camshaft alignment, reliable oil flow and pressure and stable valve timing operation.
DV5 Timing System Redesign
The early DV5 engines (2018-22) were originally fitted with a 7mm timing chain, which was prone to stretch and premature wear. In early 2023, this was superseded by a redesigned 8mm timing chain system, that improved tensile strength, durability and fatigue resistance.
The upgrade requires a complete timing system redesign, including revised camshafts and a modified camshaft carrier to ensure correct fitment. While factory fitted 8mm systems provide improved reliability, correct servicing and regular oil change intervals remain essential to prevent timing chain and camshaft wear.
For early DV5 engines still fitted with the 7mm chain, a full timing chain and camshaft carrier replacement is required to achieve long-term reliability.
Correct Identification
The 1.5 BlueHDi engine is may be fitted with either a 7mm or 8mm timing chain system, these are not interchangeable. Vehicle data must not be relied on as a sole method of identification as this won’t accurately represent the timing system fitted in the engine. Correct identification must always be confirmed by inspection.
Measuring the Chain
One method of identification is by measuring the thickness of the timing chain. If the chain is 7mm the older camshaft carrier is fitted, while the 8mm means it has been previously upgraded
Camshaft Carrier OE
The most reliable way to tell which timing chain system is currently installed is by checking the reference number on the housing of the camshaft carrier.
