The Big Problem with Vauxhall’s 1.6 CDTi
History of the 1.6 CDTi
1.6 CDTi, also referred to as the “whisper diesel”, is an engine developed by Vauxhall and manufactured by general motors.
It was first introduced in 2013, featuring in the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. It’s known for its affordability and fuel economy, however there is one glaring issue with this engine that most people may not be aware of.
Which Vehicles Feature the 1.6 CDTi?
This engine can be found in the following applications:
Vauxhall:
- Astra – 2013 –
- Insignia – 2017 –
- Meriva – 2013 –
- Mokka – 2015 –
- Zafira – 2013 – 2018
A Troublesome Tensioner
The main problem with the 1.6 CDTi is in the timing chain system. The OE tensioner does not feature a gasket, meaning, that while the engine is off, it will drain oil. Due to this, as the engine starts, the chain will begin to rattle until the tensioner refills with oil and once again reaches full tension.
This slack in the chain can lead to chain skipping and premature wear, not only on the chain but on the metal guides. Chunks of guide material and metal shavings from the chain can break off and end up in the oil sump.
In addition to this, the timing system has been placed behind the gearbox at the back of the engine, making it a much harder and more expensive job to replace.
When Should I Replace my Timing Chain?
It is commonly believed that a timing chain will last the lifetime of the engine and will never need to be replaced. While it’s true that a well maintained chain may last longer than most expect, it is not abnormal for a chain to fail. One of the most common ways to identify imminent timing chain failure is an audible rattling from the engine bay. As the chain begins to wear or lose tension, it will come away from the sprockets and will create a very distinct rattling sound when active.
Other signs of timing chain failure include:
- Active check engine light
- Oil contaminated with metal shavings
- Engine misfiring
- Lack of acceleration
- Engine not starting
If any of these symptoms are identified the timing chain will need to be inspected straight away, as a timing chain failure can cause very expensive damage. Read more about timing chain failures here>
Is this Engine Reliable?
Overall, the 1.6CDTi seems like a reliable engine. Through all the research I have done, I have found few issues and the majority of them are related to this OE tensioner issue which we have a simple fix for. Overall, from the experience of people who have owned and driven vehicles with this engine, they are generally satisifed.
GT Automotive’s Solution
At GT Automotive we have the solution for this problematic tensioner. Our full timing chain kit features the missing gasket, creating a reservoir for oil to be contained in while the engine is off.
