Why Renault Pulleys can fail
One of the most common issues on Renault TRAFIC engines is premature pulley failure, particularly on the auxiliary belt system. Like most engines, the pulleys rely on a sealed bearing and precision-machined running surfaces to maintain smooth operation. Over time, the bearing grease deteriorates, the internal wear, and amounts of heat and contamination can break down the bearing’s principle. Once this happens the pulley develops roughness, wobble or excessive noise and ultimately leads to the bearing to collapse.
While it is not unusual for components to degrade after exposure to high temperatures, vibration and constant load, the failure rate on these particular pulleys are notably higher than expected. While there is no exact root cause or justifiable evidence, According to Renault Trafic MOT data in 2021, out of 118,269 tests, 41.9% resulted in failure, with 4.1% (roughly 4 in every 100) of which being ‘Noise, emissions and leaks’ – the category where pulley-related issues fall under.
What’s Affected?
It is important to note that this does not affect every Renault TRAFIC. However, the MK III models fitted with the M9R 2.0 DCi engines show a higher rate of premature pulley wear. Whilst, the engine is notable for its strong performance, its auxiliary system is a known weak point.
Designed as a direct OE-spec solution, it restores smooth auxiliary belt operation, eliminates noise, vibration and premature wear associated with the factory-fitted Renault TRAFIC part.
